THE SOUTH BANK SHOW: The Making of Viva la Diva

SUNDAY 9 DECEMBER / ITV1 Network

Viva la Diva is an ambitious show which fuses the talents of two of Britain’s most popular performers – opera superstar Katherine Jenkins and prima ballerina Darcey Bussell.

For the first time ever, both artists are stepping well outside their comfort zones to take on daring and surprising challenges in an all-new song and dance spectacular. Earlier this year, they invited The South Bank Show along exclusively to document every step of their journey…

Highlights of this unique and insightful film, of their journey from concept through to opening night include:

• Both artists meeting with respected director Kim Gavin to work on their ideas for the show – a tribute to the divas who inspired them
• Darcey hanging up her pointe shoes to learn completely different styles of dance with top choreographers from around the world
• Katherine taking on the challenge of dancing alongside Darcey in a series of ambitious and complicated routines
• Darcey rehearsing her lines for the show – the first time ever she’ll speak on the professional stage
• Katherine attending singing lessons to master a new set list which includes songs totally different from her usual repertoire
• Costume fittings for both girls with top designer Julien Macdonald

The South Bank Show will also include exclusive footage of Viva La Diva’s opening night at The Lowry Theatre in Manchester on 25th November, prior to its already sold-out UK tour.

Presented and edited by Melvyn Bragg
Produced and directed by Matt Cain.
