DISPATCHES: Sandwiches Unwrapped

Channel 4 / Monday 28 July 2008 @ 8.00pm
Dispatches investigates the British sandwich industry and reveals what's really in the nation's popular 'lunch-on-the-go'. Sandwiches from some of the top retailers are submitted to scientific analysis to reveal their nutritional values with surprising results, and undercover filming uncovers shocking conditions inside one factory.
Reported by Channel 4 News presenter Alex Thompson, the investigation reveals the huge amounts of salt and fat inside some of the best-selling sandwiches and how many of them bulk out their fillings with unexpected ingredients. And secretly filmed footage of unhygienic practices at one factory that supplies small shops and garages shocks an independent expert on food safety and environmental health who says he would not eat a sandwich made there: "Absolutely not. I couldn't trust them not to give me food poisoning."
Dispatches also examines the amount of information available about the ingredients on the packaging of sandwiches and the marketing techniques behind this five billion pound industry.
